The AI Selection Gap.
When a buyer asks an AI tool which business to choose, AI names a short list. If your business is not on that list, you are invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding - even when you would have been a good fit. That difference, between the businesses AI names and the businesses that actually fit, is the AI Selection Gap.
1. What the AI Selection Gap is
More buyers start with a question, not a search box. They ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's AI things like "which accountant should I use for a small business" or "a good family dentist near me." AI does not return ten blue links. It gives a short, confident answer with a few named businesses.
Those named businesses get the attention. Everyone else is left out of the conversation before the buyer ever visits a website. The AI Selection Gap is the distance between where a business actually stands and whether AI names it in that moment. A business can be a genuinely good choice and still sit outside the answer.
2. Why the gap happens
AI does not walk around a neighbourhood or read every page on the internet in real time before it answers. It draws on what it has learned about a business from public information: how clearly the business describes what it offers, how much independent proof exists, whether there is a clear reason to choose it over an alternative, and how easy that information is to find and read.
When that public information is thin, scattered, inconsistent, or hard for a machine to read, AI cannot reliably connect the business to a buyer's question. It is not a penalty and it is not personal. AI simply cannot recommend what it cannot clearly understand and verify. The gap is usually an information problem, not a quality problem.
3. The four things CHOIVE measures
CHOIVE scores a business on the same four things AI uses to recommend and buyers use to decide. Each is worth 25 points, for a CHOIVE Index out of 100.
The pillar scores use evidence about the business itself. Whether an AI tool happened to recommend the business does not automatically raise or lower any pillar score.
4. How CHOIVE checks the gap
CHOIVE runs the kinds of questions buyers actually ask across several AI tools and records each answer separately. It notes whether the business is named, how many times, and which businesses get named instead. It then scores the four pillars from current public information and compares the business to the competitors that show up in real answers.
Every number CHOIVE reports is measured, not estimated. If a check cannot be completed, CHOIVE reports it as unavailable rather than filling in a guess. The result is a CHOIVE Index out of 100, a competitor comparison, and a short list of fixes in priority order.
An AI answer recorded during a diagnostic is a real response for that run. It is not a promise that every person will see the same answer inside a consumer app, where models, settings, location, and history can differ. CHOIVE is transparent about this in its methodology.
5. What to do about it
The good news is that the AI Selection Gap is closable. Because the gap is usually about the public information AI relies on, the fixes are concrete: make what you offer clearer, build the public proof that backs your claims, state the specific reason someone should choose you, and remove the friction that stops people and machines from reading your information.
CHOIVE turns that into a prioritized plan, so you work on the change that moves the needle first rather than guessing.
